Henry Co., TN Worsham/Washum families
There are several Worsham families who lived in Henry Co., TN. It has been very difficult to identify parents. Some of the families stayed in and around Paris, TN, another family moved to Woodruff Co., AR and settled in Cotton Plant and a third family moved to Pulaski Co, Illinois and settled around Grand Chain.
We believe there were likely at least three children of the unknown parents. They were a slave family that originally came to Henry Co., TN from Virginia.
Family researcher Clara M. Roddy-Worsham, 2001, wrote about her husband's Worsham family:
"They originated from Paris (Henry Co), TN by way of Virginia. My husbands family had always indicated that they were the slaves of two sisters from Virginia. The furthest they have gone back is to their great grandfather "Ole" Gloster Worsham who was born approximately 1826 in Paris, TN. He had 4 or 5 sons and had been married twice. He and his sons migrated to Woodruff Co, AR in the latter 1880's from information passed down through the family. Royal Worsham is my father-n-law. His father, Gloster Worsham's parents are unknown to us. Furthermore, we found out at one of the family reunions that there are numerous Worshams in Texas, who are related to the Worshams from Arkansas." Clara added in 2003 “Sarah Worsham b in the latter 1700 in Dinwiddie Co, VA, and d abt 1854 Henry Co, TN was the Master/Mistress of the Worsham slaves in Henry Co, TN. We heard that Ole Gloster was a young man when he traveled to Tennessee with his Master/Mistress along with other family members from Virginia. The 1850 census list Sarah Worsham with her son and several slaves in the Henry Co, TN cens, however, the slaves were not listed by name.”
Sarah Worsham is on page 493 of the Worsham and Washam Family History: “2.1.2.1.4.5. Sarah Worsham b 1 Aug 1777 Dinwiddie Co., VA d/o Ludson I & Miss Green. Sarah gave a deposition on 19 Jun 1824 from Mecklenburg Co. that she was the sister of Millison Blanton in the court case of Amos a pauper vs. David Hobbs.92 Deposition of Sally Worsham:
Question by Plaintiff. Do you know any thing about Amos, was he the son of Little Beck? Beck Daughter of Dilcy? Answer. I do not, myself, know anything relative to Amos or his Mother, only as I have heard it from my sister Millison Blanton & others in the neighborhood. And further the Deponents saith not. Sarah died 28 Aug 1854 Henry Co. TN & bur Old Travis Place, Henry Co., TN. She never married. Travis Cem. shows she was born 6 Nov 1777, p 321.”
Sarah Worsham’s brother in law, William Blanton, was also deposed (see page 475): “William was a witness for Amas a pauper against David Hobbs 19 Jun 1824 Mecklenburg Co., VA. Deposition of William Blanton: “Question by Plaintiff. Do you know whether or not Amos was the son of a Negro woman by the name of Beck? Answer: I have known Amos ever since a small boy and am as fully assured, from all I ever heard upon the subject that Beck was his Mother, as I could be not to have been present at his birth. Question by same: Do you know who was the Mother of Beck? Answer: I have always understood that she was the Daughter of a negro woman call'd Dilcy. Question: Do you know whether or not Dilcy was a descendant of the Indian race the family commonly call'd the Free Set? Answer: I have often heard Ludwell Worsham with whom I was well acquainted & to whom Dilcy belonged Dilcy did spring from that set. Question by one of the Magistrates: Do you know who Dilcy's Mother was. Answer: I do not recollect the name of Dilcy's Mother. Question: Were there not a considerable number of Negroes of that family in the possession of Ludwell Worsham. Answer: There were, I have ever understood. Question: Were there not other Negroes by the name of Beck and Dilsy in the same family. Answer: There were as I understood. Question by Plaintiff: Was not Amos the son of Little Beck? Answer: He was from all I ever understood. Question: Was not Dilcy the only one of that Name I knew the Mother of Little Beck. Answer: She was. Question by Magistrate: Did Dilcy descend from the Male or Female set call'd Free Set? Answer: I do not nor have any recollection of ever having heard any thing said relative to that question. Question: Were there not other Negroes in the possession of Ludwell Worsham that did descend from the Male side of the Free set so call'd. Answer: There were of both sides, as I have been often informed. Question: Was there not another Beck said to have been descended from the male side of same set. Answer: There was but have no recollection of what side She sprange from.” On page 461: “Slaves of Ludwell Warsham are divided: 9 to heirs of Mary Smith, sister; 9 to Margaret Worsham, sister; 7 to Phillip Williams & Martha Williams, sister; 7 to heirs of Lewelling Warsham, brother. Later on, descendants of some of the slaves of Ludwell sued for their freedom as they were descendants of "a native American Indian named Bess who was of the Appalachian tribe of Indians and that the said American Indian Bess was somewhat prior to the year 1705 brought into that part of the then Colony of Virginia which was settled and occupied by the White people by one Robert Hicks and kept as a Slave by the said Robert Hicks and those claiming under him until the time of her death as her descendants from the time of their births respectively have been until the present time.” Berryman Tucker aged upwards of seventy years, a witness in the suit depending in the Superior Court of Law of the County of Brunswick, wherein Amos (a pauper) is plaintiff and David Hobbs defendant; after being duly sworn deposeth and saith: That he remembers old Morior who was held by one John Evans of the county of Dinwiddie and that he had all ways herd it said that Morier was the daughter of the Old Indian Bess; that Molley who was held by William Jones was the Daughter of the aforesaid Morier, and that William Jones was the Daughter of the aforesaid Morier, and that the Molley was the Mother of Dilsey who was then held by Ludwell Worsham." On page 463, “In Dec Court 1801, she (Margaret Worsham) received slaves under Lot #2: Farn, Amos, Little Delcy, Elizza, Phoebe, Faney, Mary & child, Jesse, Sam as an heir of her brother Ludwell Worsham.”
Amena, a descendant of Bess, wrote in 2006:
"My ancestors sued for their freedom in 1814 based on being descendants of maureer and Bess also. They were from Prince Edward county, VA and slaves of Molley Evans-Moore."
Sarah Worsham's slaves ages and sex are in the 1850 Henry Co, TN slave schedule: age 56 female black, age 41 female mulatto, age 38 female black, age 35 female black, age 32 male black, age 29 female black, age 27 male black, age 25 male black, age 22 male black, age 21 male black, age 19 male black, age 17 female black, age 17 male black, age 16 female black, age 16 male black, age 13 female black, age 11 female black, age 9 female black, age 7 female black, age 5 male black, age 3 female black. Either the age 22 black male, age 21 black male is probably Gloster Worsham (#3 below).
The eldest slave was a female and believed to be the mother of this family. She was born about 1794 of Mecklenburg, VA and died after 1850 Henry Co, TN.

Rozelia E. Burson Sep 27, 1921-Mar 26, 2002 ELKHART, Ind. — Rozelia E. “Rose” Burson, 80, 333 W. Mishawaka Road, formerly of 910 Benham Court, Elkhart, died of natural causes at 10:10 a.m. Tuesday at Valley View Health Care Center. She was born Sept. 27, 1921, in McKenzie, Tenn., to Horace and Lillian Washum. She married Hugh W. Burson Jr. on June 14, 1943, in Elkhart. He died Oct. 19, 1996. Burson worked as a crossing guard at Roosevelt Elementary School for many years. She later worked at Sorg’s Jewelers and then at Taylor Products, from which she retired.
She was a member of Canaan Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Gospel Chorus and the Missionary Society. She was also a member of the Urban League and the NAACP in Elkhart and of “All Peoples Club,” an organization for people of all ethnic groups in the 1950s. Surviving are one daughter, Shirley (Roland) Burson-Johnson, Fort Wayne; one son, Victor R. (Antoinette) Burson, Elkhart; one sister, Aline Swain, Cleveland, Ohio; and two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Odie Washum.
Calling hours will be one hour prior to the service, which will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Canaan Baptist Church in Elkhart. The Rev. Grady Wickers will officiate. Ronald Dewayne "Jughead" Washum, 41, died Wed, Jan 9 at Jackson-Madison Co General Hospital after suffering an aneurysm. Services were, Sat, Jan 12. Burial was in Greenwood Cem. Born in Paris on Dec 13, 1960, he was a son of Johnie B. and Willie Ethel Tharpe Washum, both deceased. Washum attended Henry Co High School and was a Methodist. Survivors include two daughters, LaToya Russell of Paris and Kelia Washum of Hollow Rock; one son, Ronald Washum of Paducah; one brother, Johnie Ray Washum of Paris; an uncle, Fred (Annie) Tharpe of Paris, who was his caregiver.

In 1930, Louis worked at a veneer mill and was married about 1923, but no family was living with him. Louis md. Willie Ella Collins. 1.8B.2. Charles Louis Worsham "Charlie" b Dec 1889 Nashville, Davidson, TN. (10-1900; 26-1920; 29-1930) Birthdates in the census do not correlate well. Charley Wisham is living with his mother, Alice Wisham, the widow of Porter, in the 1900 Cache, Woodruff Co, AR census. Charles, 10 years old, worked as a farm labor. Porter named children Charlie, Pearl, Morris & William and so did Charles. Apparently, Charles named his children after some of his brothers and sisters. It is very likely, that this Charles is a son of Porter.
Charles Wisham md 1st) Grizflia in 1916 of Lake Side, St Francis, AR & they divorced 28 Nov 1923 in St. Francis Co, AR. Grazilla was b abt 1893 in GA.
Charles married 2nd) Willie May Oeolin Rodgers 24 Oct 1924 in Neelyville, Butler Co, Missouri. (Claybron Wisham, 2005) Willie was the daughter of William M. Rodgers "Will" of North Little Rock and Lucy Weaver (also from Ark, possibly Wynne, Ark.) who died at Willie's birth. (Claybron Wisham, 2005) Family records have her birth as 4 Aug 1902 in Wynne, Cross Co, Arkansas, however, Ohio death record index has her birth as 4 Oct 1902. Her family lived in Argenta, Pulaski Co, AR in 1910, where Willie May was age 3, her parents were listed as Will Rogers and Cornelia. Cornelia was Will's second wife who he md abt 1905. She is co-chair of the High School’s School and Community Relations Committee, newsletter editor and past president of the Northeastern Ohio Association of School Nurses, and served as PTA president at the former Sussex Elementary School. I have been told that my grandfather's parents were full-blooded Black Creek and Cherokee Indian. My great-grandfather was named John Veraneek and was a Black Creek Indian Chief from Nescogee, NC. The family story is that my great-grandfather and other Indians were part of the famous March of the Winter 1838-1839 and forced out of Carolina along with other Creek Indians to Oklahoma by the US Calvary. I believe that our name (other family members also named Worsham) was given to my ancestors by English settlers as many plantation owners did with African/Caribbean slaves."

After several years of marketing and product development
in the food industry, Karen Hudson, BA '91, MBA '95, was looking for a job about which she could be more passionate. When headhunters called, Hudson told them to get back to her if they found something in the sports or entertainment industries. "And one of them actually did," Hudson said. In 2000, Hudson joined the National Football League (NFL), where she manages corporate sponsorship marketing. The NFL has 15 to 20 corporate sponsors at any one time, companies such as Coors, Southwest Airlines, Visa, Staples and Pepsi. Hudson works to develop, sell and renew sponsor relationships. She also finds ways to give sponsors added value and to "create some excitement at times other than the Super Bowl and Pro Bowl." The Pro Football Hall of Fame, pre-season training camp and NFL kickoff events are three ways the league engages sponsors in high-visibility activities. After earning her bachelor's degree, Hudson-then Karen Wisham-wanted to work in the sports or entertainment industry. "I sent résumés to record companies and sports agents, but didn't have the experience or contacts to get a foot in the door." So she chose a more traditional route, working for Frito-Lay in a manufacturing capacity. Post-MBA, Hudson established a career in brand marketing and new product development at General Mills and then Campbell Soup.
