Lana Bowling, 2002 wrote:
My great great grandmother
was Fannie Worsham, and she was a domestic servant at a "plantation" type home
called Meadow Wood near Gretna, VA. It seems as though she was orphaned around age 6
because census reports indicate that she lived with two different families--1860
cens she lived with a Shields family in Pittsylvania Co--1870 census she lived with
a Wilson family in Pittsylvania Co. Fannie was employed by the Wooding family that
owned Meadow Wood for many years, and although she was not married, she had at least
two children--Almedia (also spelled Almeda) and Leah. Almedia was my grandmother's
mother. My grandmother was Dorothy Drayton Dove. Unconfirmed research suggest that a
Wooding may have been the father of Fannie's children (Robert Wooding specifically
was mentioned). I have since been in contact with someone related to that specific
Shields family, and he hopes to provide me with some information about why Fannie
was there. He also believes that the Wilson family with whom Fannie was living in
the 1870 cens is somehow related to the Shields family. Fannie then went to work as
a cook at Meadow Wood. She did indeed have two children, and she was not married, so
the children went by the last name Worsham. One was my great grandmother, Almeda
(also spelled Almedia) Worsham. Almeda born Dec 7, 1873 and died Dec 31, 1937. The
other was named Alice Lee [not Leah as previously thought], born Apr 13, 1883 died
May (or possibly Mar) 6, 1927.

dated Mar 29, 1905. She is Sallie Ann Worsham (page 289,

the dau of William Coleman Worsham. The following is a copy of the letter
from Sallie Worsham exactly as she wrote it:
"Republican Grove, Virginia
March 29, 1905
Mr. John Worsham
Richmond, Virginia
Dear Sir,
You letter requesting a pedigree of
our branch of the Worsham family rec’d. we have no written pedigree;
therefore, I will have to depend on the memory of my father for all the
information I give you.
My great, great grandfather came from
some European country, possibly England and settled near Petersburg Virginia. I
don’t know the date at which he came nor his christian name.
My great grandfather, whose name was
Essex, fought in the Revolutionary War. He lived in Williamsburg, Va. for a
number of years, then moved to Prince Edward county, Virginia. He married A Miss
Doniphent. There were six children by this marriage, namely: Henry, Thomas,
Samuel, Archebald, Elizabeth and Sallie. He then moved from Prince Edward to
Pittsylvania County, Virginia, and settled near Staunton(spelling ?) river and
there spent the rest of his life.
His son, Henry, went to Louisiana,
married and made his home there. I don’t know whom he married.
I think all the others made their
home in Virginia. Thomas and Sallie never married. Samuel married Fannie East,
there were six children by this marriage namely: Myles, Issac, Thomas, Martha,
Elizabeth and Mary. Elizabeth married William Smith, they had only one child, a
daughter, whose name I think was Martha though they always called her Puss.
Archebald, my Grandfather, married
Dollie Bruce. He had seven children, namely: William C. Thomas, Henry,
Elizabeth, Archebald, John and Essex. William C. first married Julia Vaughn,
there were three children by this marriage namely: Dollie, James and John. His
second wife was Parthenia Payne (my mother). There were six children by this
marriage, namely: William H., Elizabeth, Susan, Sallie A., Samuel E., and
Charles E.
Henry Worsham married Emma Green.
They had six children. Thomas Worsham married Susan Layne and they had seven
children. John never married, he died in Petersburg while fighting in the Civil
War. Archebald married Lelia Carr; they had eight children. Essex married Martha
Hubbard, they had seven children. Elizabeth Worsham married William Moon.
My great grandfather had a brother by
the name of Hal or Henry. I don’t know whom he married, but he had three sons
named William, John and Patrick. My great grandfather’s brother henry fought
in the War of 1812 and he was also in the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. My
great grandfather had a cousin by the name of Branch Worsham living in Prince
Edward County a few years ago. I suppose that he or some of his descendants
still live there. My father, William C., is doubtless the oldest member of our
branch of the Worsham family. He is now seventy-six years old. I am sorry that I
cannot give Miss Harrison and yourself a better history of our branch of the
Worsham family, but I hope this will be of some benefit.
Sincerely,
Sallie A. Worsham"
This letter confirms most of the
information on the family of Essex Worsham. However, the letter has Thomas
& Samuel are two different people and that Essex had another daughter named
Sallie. We have added these two new children.

22 Oct 1950. During his senior year, Arnold Palmer met Bud
Worsham, whose brother Lew was a professional golfer. At Worsham's urging,
Palmer accepted a golf scholarship to Wake Forest College in North Carolina. He
enrolled at Wake Forest in 1947, and quickly began winning, or coming close to
winning, every amateur and intercollegiate tournament in sight. During
Palmer's senior year in college, Bud Worsham, his best friend and roommate, was
killed in a car accident. "After Wake's 1950
homecoming
game against North Carolina, Palmer was groggy from a few bourbon and Cokes. He declined Worsham's pressing invitation to join he and Gene Scheer for dinner and the homecoming dance at a Durham hotel. Drinking and dancing were not allowed on Wake's Baptist campus. Worsham and Scheer were crushed in a crash that night when their Buick flipped into a rocky creek bed on the way home. Palmer had to identify the bodies the next day. "It was the worst thing I'd ever seen," he said in his book. Palmer didn't return to school after Christmas, joining the Coast Guard instead. "Wake without Bud was unthinkable," he wrote. "He was the reason I'd gone there in the first place, the reason I'd stayed, the reason I'd become one of the best college golfers in America." He returned to Wake in 1954, playing and acting as interim golf coach when Johnny Johnston took over as athletics director after Weaver became the first ACC commissioner. Palmer won the first ACC tournament that
year but fell a few hours short of earning his degree."

"Arnie, pictured left, and his best pal, Bud Worsham, as golf scholarship students at Wake Forest. Their undisciplined personalities were a perfect match."
Palmer and Buddy Worsham, the younger brother of National Open champion Lew Worsham, became pals as teenagers. Today, 54 years later, Palmer still mentions him in his books and at golf clinics, as he did at Peninsula Papagayo. Because Worsham was the most important and memorable part of Palmer’s young life, I thought you would like to know about it. They were the same age (17), enjoyed the same food and liked the same kind of girls. Their unruly, undisciplined personalities were a perfect match. Their friendship bonded and Worsham had a greater impact on Palmer’s life than he could have ever imagined.
They partied together, looked after each other, and double-dated together. Because Worsham was more introverted and shier, it was up to Palmer to arrange the dates.
On weekends, Palmer sometimes went to Worsham’s house in Maryland, or Worsham would visit Palmer’s home in Latrobe. Both earned golf scholarships at Wake University and it was Worsham, with his work ethic, who made Palmer keep up his grade point average to avoid losing his scholarship.
“In retrospect,” recalled Palmer, “my junior year at Wake Forest was probably the most fun of all of my college years. There were plenty of parties and plenty of pretty girls, lots of laughs and more competitive golf than I ever played in my life.”
Fate Steps In
In the fall of 1950, it was Wake Forest’s homecoming football game and emotions around campus were high. Arnie and Bud planned to attend the game, have dinner afterward and maybe go to the homecoming dance in Durham.
Bud went to the stadium to sell programs and Arnie went to the dorm to take a nap. Bud returned a short time later and pressured Arnie to join him and their next door neighbor, Gene Scheer, for dinner and the dance in Durham.
Arnie sleepily told them he wasn’t interested in the dance and suggested a movie instead. However, Bud and Gene were adamant and went to the dance in Durham. Arnie hit the sack, and after enjoying a nice nap, he went to the movies, and got back before midnight.
The bodies were lying on a table in the morgue. Arnie, numb and distraught, said: “It was the worst thing I’ve ever seen.” That was over 54 years ago. Arnie still quietly mourns Worsham.
In the morning, he noticed Bud’s bed had not been slept in. He quickly checked next door and learned Gene Scheer’s bed hadn’t been slept in either. That was unlike Bud. He would not stay out all night without letting Arnie know beforehand. Concern changed to worry and worry changed to panic.
Later that morning, golf coach Johnny Johnson came to the dorm and broke the news that Bud and Gene were probably killed in an auto accident and the funeral director wanted Arnie to identify the bodies.
He was distraught and numb with disbelief. When he was taken into a room where both bodies were lying on a table, it was, said Arnie, “the worst thing I’ve ever seen.”
He reeled with grief and is haunted to this day that if he had only gone with Bud that night to Durham, he would have driven the car and the entire tragedy might have been avoided.
His life at that point in time took a severe detour. Going back to Wake Forest without Bud was unthinkable. However, peer pressure and his parents forced Arnie to finish his fall term.
He could not bring himself to re-enroll for the second semester and joined the U.S. Coast Guard the following January in 1951 for a three year hitch.
His scholarship was reactivated three years later and he resumed playing golf aggressively. His springboard to professional fame and fortune came in 1954 when he won he U.S. Amateur Championship.
