Arden - Lois Dumas, 91, of Brevard Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004. A native of Mecklenburg County, Mrs. Dumas was the daughter of the late Charles and Ava McAulay Washam. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Eugene Staton Dumas, who died in 1988; her stepfather, Frank Reid; and a brother, James Clarence Washam. Mrs. Dumas and her husband operated The Dumas Grocery and she was a charter member of Long Shoals Baptist Church, where she served as secretary of the Sunday School for a number of years and was a member of the Women's Missionary Union. She was a member of the Avery's Creek Extension Homemaker's Club. Surviving are a son, Charles Dumas and his wife, Elaine, of Murphy; two grandchildren, Charles Dumas Jr. and his wife, Gwen, of Aberdeen and Julia Carol Moore and her husband, Brian, of Marble; and three great-grandchildren, Rachel and Jacob Moore and Isabel Dumas. Also surviving are a sister, Sadie Enloe of Gilkey and a brother, Benjamin Reid of Brooklyn, N.Y. A funeral service for Mrs. Dumas will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Long Shoals Baptist Church with the Rev. Roger Rearden officiating. Burial will be at Green Hills Cemetery.

2.  George Worsham b abt 1620 & probably brother to William Worsham as they patented land together in 1652 in Henrico Co., VA. George md Mary about 1643. He was Justice of the Peace in Henrico in 1656. He died before 6 Jun 1666.  George and his wife, Mary, may be mentioned In Middlesex County, VA - Early Marriages; William and Mary Quarterly, V. 4, No. 2:

"DESCENDANTS OF HENRY RANDOLPH There were two emigrants, William Randolph and his uncle Henry. Mr. W. G. Stanard has an interesting note in the Richmond Critic for Sept. 3, 1888, regarding the descendants of the latter. Rev. Henry Isham Longden, Shangton Rectory, Leicester, England, states that in the visitation it appears that Henry was the uncle of William, and was baptized November 27, 1623.(1) Henry Randolph was clerk of Henrico county from about 1656 and clerk of the House of Burgesses from about 1660 to his death in 1673. The following paper is in the handwriting of John Randolph, of Roanoke, copied evidently from some family Bible. The notes on the margin and the pedigree at the end were perhaps added by Mr. Randoph himself: 1 Henry & Eliz Randolph mar: by Mr Edw: ffolliott(1) minister ye 12th of Oct 1652 obijt Eliz: 12 oct 1660. 2 Henry, son of Hen: & Eliz: born at Appamatok 2 Sept, 1654, being Satterday, [died infant 1654] baptized by Mr. Robt Lesley being Sunday Sponsrs Geo: & Mary Worsham. Robt & Mary West–dyed ye 8 8ber being Monday–buried ye 10th."  There were Worthams in Middlesex Co., VA but no Worshams. The Worshams of Henderson Co., KY believed they were descended from the Middlesex Co., VA Worshams. Upon checking the Middlesex Co., VA records, Dorothy Tuttle determined they were Worthams.  . The earliest Wortham found in the Middlesex Co., VA records was John Wortham b. abt 1640 md. Jane & he d. bef 1 Aug 1692 leaving a will. Information on him and his children were listed in the Christ Church, Middlesex Co., VA records and in a book, "A Place in Time, Middlesex County, Virginia 1650-1750" by Darrett B. and Anita H. Rutman (New York: W. W. Norton & Company)

Charles Henry Worsham, 87, of Moneta, died Tuesday, August 10, 2004. Arrangements by Carder-Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford, 586-3443 Published on 8/11/2004 The Roanoke Times. Charles Henry Worsham, 87, of Moneta, died Tuesday August 10, 2004 in Bedford Memorial Hospital. He was born August 23, 1916 in Amherst Co., a son of the late Henry Shields Worsham and Clyde Elizabeth Casey Worsham.  Mr. Worsham was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. He was a Captain in the US Army having served during WWII. He also was a retired Chemical Engineer of Eastern Standard Oil with 22 years of service where he was granted several US Patents. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Cecil M. Worsham. Mr. Worsham is survived by his wife of 67 years, Sarah Crawford Worsham; two sons, Charles Edward Worsham and his wife, Patricia of Madison Heights and Penn Eheart Worsham of CA; four grandchildren, Joshua, James, Travis and Michell; one brother, Joseph Shields Worsham of Madison Heights; one sister-in-law, Eunice Worsham of Madison Heights; and numerous nieces and nephews.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Moneta Rescue Squad, PO Box 497, Moneta, VA 24121. A memorial service will be conducted at Bethlehem United Methodist Church at a later date.

Therese Marie Ann Worsham, 84, of Parkersburg, died December 24, 2001, Fishersville, VA. She was born July 26, 1917, in La Patrie, Quebec Province, Canada, a daughter of the late Wilfrid and Malvina Lippe Beauregard. She was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church of Parkersburg. She is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, Richard and Deborah Worsham of Greenville, VA and Charles Worsham of Marietta; one brother, Wilfrid Beauregard of Alexandria, VA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Worsham in 1978; three brothers, Armand, Arthur and Lee Beauregard; and one sister, Alice Beauregard. Services will be today at Parkersburg. Entombment will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

John Goddin & Roxanna Ford (June Rathbun, 2004) Clarke was named in her father, John's will probated 7 Mar 1865 in Henrico Co., VA.  Clarke R. Worsham along with Adolphus Goddin & Wellington Goddin were named executors of the will of John Goddin born "19 Feb 1780 now 83 a good old age." "John Worsham, served in Co. F 21st Virginia Infantry. He served as a Lt.  He enlisted 21 Apr 1861 as a private at Richmond by Melton Cary for 1 yr.  He was present through 31 Oct 1862, detailed as clerk to Gen J. R. Jones per muster roll 31 Dec 1862.  28 Feb 1863 pay and clothing list shows age 22, hazel eyes, light hair and complexion, six foot, born in Richmond, clerk.  Shown as 1st Cpl 29 Apr 1863, 2nd Sgt 30 Jun 1863.  Present through 29 Feb 1864.  Absent wounded since 19 Sep 1864 per 31 Dec 1864 muster roll.  Admitted CSA General Hospital Charlottesville 29 Sep 1864 v s left leg wound. 30 Sep 1864 reports lists as Lt (Adjutant)." John, an “Old F.”, in Richmond, VA, wrote the Civil War book “One Of Jackson’s Foot Cavalry, His Experience and What He Saw During The War 1861-1865, Including a History of "F Company," Richmond, VA, 21st Regiment Virginia Infantry, Second Brigade, Jackson’s Division, Second Corps, A. N. VA”, New York, The Neale Publishing Company, 1912. He was a member of the 21st Virginia which was a part of the Stonewall Brigade. In the preface he wrote August 1912: “In writing my experience and what I saw during the war as one of Jackson's "foot cavalry," it is not my intention to make a comparison of commands, but simply to state what was seen and experienced by me. When other commands are mentioned, it is done to give their position so that the reader may the better understand the situation; and when I have a word of praise for them, it is because they came under my eye. It is needless to make comparisons between different commands of the Army of Northern Virginia. “Brig. Gen. Stewart, captured; Brig. Gen. Walker and Col. W. A. Witcher, who commanded the Second Brigade, were wounded. F Company lost W. B. Edmunds and P. S. Richeson, wounded; and W. C. Seay died a few hours after being wounded. While we were engaged in these battles, Sheridan with his cavalry left Grant's army May 9, 1864, on a raid to cut Lee's communications, and capture Richmond! On the morning of the 12th, he arrived at Brook schoolhouse, about three and a quarter miles from Richmond on the Brook turnpike. At that time my grandmother, the widow of Capt. John Goddin, lived on the west side of that road two and a quarter miles from Richmond, her house fronting south. In front of it, several hundred yards off, was a fort, situated on the turnpike at Laburnam. On the Hermitage road was a similar fort, and they were connected by breastworks. On the morning of the 12th grandmother got up early to do the churning, preferring to do it herself, taking her position on the front porch. When the butter "had come," she went to the well at the side of the house to cool the churn dasher, and get some cold water to take the butter up. At the same moment a squad of Yankee cavalry came around the other side of the house, and, perceiving the churn, helped themselves to buttermilk, and when the old lady came back she found the Yankees on the porch, one with the churn to his lips, drinking! It made the old lady hot, and she whacked him as hard as she could with the dasher, and said some very plain words to the party. They ran off in a good humor, saying they would see if our breastworks were manned. Going down a dividing fence until they reached the Laburnam fence, they fired a few shots and at once discovered the breastworks were manned! Running back to the house they went to the barnyard, took possession of a mule and cart, filled the cart with corn, and drove off towards the main body, which was at Brook schoolhouse. All at grandmother's home lamented the loss of the fine mule and cart, but about two hours after the mule came back with the empty cart!

“As we returned a Yankee battery of eight guns had full play on us in the field, and our line became a little confused; we halted, every man instantly turned and faced the battery. As we did so, I heard a thud on my right, as if one had been struck with a heavy fist. Looking around I saw a man at my side standing erect, with his head off, a stream of blood spurting a foot or more from his neck. As I turned farther around, I saw three others lying on the ground, all killed by this cannon shot. The man standing was a captain in the 42nd Va. Regt., and his brains and blood bespattered the face and clothing of one of my company, who was standing in the rear. This was the second time I saw four men killed by one shot. The other occurred in the battle of Cedar Run, a few weeks earlier. Each time the shot struck as it was descending - the first man had his head taken off, the next was shot through the breast, the next through the stomach, and the fourth had all his bowels torn out. He d 1954 Richmond, VA & she d 13 Nov 1958 Richmond, VA. George Gibson Worsham's obit was published in the 22 Feb 1954 Washington Post.

The following biography was written about him pp 799 & 800 of "Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography by Lyon Gardiner Tyler, Vol V (NY: Lewis Historical Publishing Co., 1915):

George Gibson Worsham, of Richmond, is a son of John Henry and Mary Bell (Pilcher) Worsham, who had children: 1. Bell, married S. Edward Bates, Jr., and had daughters, Mildred and Mary. 2. Jessie, died in infancy. 3. George Gibson, of further mention. 4. Natalie, wife of W. Wirt Henry, and mother of John W. Henry. George Gibson Worsham is a grandson of Richard and Clark R. (Goddin) Worsham, the latter a sister of Wellington Goddin. Mr. Worsham's father, John H. Worsham, was a Confederate soldier, having served throughout the war until he was wounded at Winchester in 1864. He is the author of "One of Jackson's Foot Cavalry." Shortly after the war he went to Scottsville, where he engaged in the milling business and operated a line of boats on the old James river and Kanawha canal until the canal was sold to the Richmond & Alleghany railroad, when he returned to Richmond and engaged in the insurance business.

George Gibson Worsham b November 26, 1874, at Scottsville, Virginia, and was educated at his mother's knee and in the public schools of Richmond and Scottsville. Mr. Worsham took to printing early in life, and earned enough to pay for his small press and buy a bicycle before leaving school. He then went with Joseph Bryan who shortly after acquired the "Richmond Times." Mr. Worsham then went to New York and learned the operation of the linotype machine, and in 1892 set up the first of these machines in this section of the country. Mr. Worsham met the late Otmar Mergenthaler, the inventor of the linotype in Baltimore, on his return from New York, and had him explain the working of the wonderful machine to him.

When the "Evening Leader" was reestablished in 1896, Mr. Worsham took charge of the mechanical department of the newspaper, and made up the first forms of that paper, which attracted wide attention and were the first display or modern newspaper pages made up in Virginia. In 1899 Mr. Worsham left the "Evening Leader, and with Harvey L. Wilson, now editor of the "Ledger-Dispatch" of Norfolk, Virginia, established the "Richmond News," and when they sold this paper to the John L. Williams interests Mr. Worsham formed an association with Charles A. Zincke and they organized the "Richmond Press." This printing establishment is one of the largest of its kind in Virginia, and occupies spacious and convenient quarters in Richmond. Some years ago it bought from the late Dr. Hunter McGuire's heirs the old St. Luke's Hospital building at the corner of Ross and Governor streets, and erected upon the site the present mammoth Richmond Press building. In 1913 Mr. Worsham acquired the Patterson tobacco factories, at the corner of Seventh and Canal streets, and there erected the present modern Express building.

He married, November 27, 1907, Julia Pilcher, of Petersburg, daughter of Rev. John Mason Pilcher, D. D. for three years president of the Baptist General Association of Virginia, and his wife, Mary Lucy Du Val. Children: Bell, born September 25, 1908, John Gibson, October 1, 1911; Sarah DuVal, July 7. 1913."

2.1.4.2.6B.2.3.2.2.2. John Gibson Worsham m. Charlotte Lee Schneider. The following excerpt appeared in the Roanoke Times, Roanoke, VA 20 Sep 2002: 

Blacksburg, VA., Lots of people build new houses. Gibson Worsham built an old one. His house was completed just last winter, but you’d never know it. It looks just as ancient as the other buildings here at Yellow Sulphur Springs - the 200-year old mineral spring resort just outside Blacksburg. Worsham’s abode is studded with salvage yard finds and pieces of older buildings. Forget about vinyl siding; Worsham’s comes from poplar trees cut down in the adjacent woods and milled in his front yard. (The siding for his house required four trees, Worsham said; and for his nearby shed, two). Many of the house lights are gas. Heating also is by gas; the oven and refrigerator run on gas, too. The furniture is antique. Worsham, an architect who has lived at the old resort intermittently since his student years in the 1970s, said he wanted his new house to fit in. "It’s such an extraordinary complex of buildings," explained Worsham, who lives here with his wife and children. "All are part of an architectural vision that you can feel when you are there....We decided to build something that would recreate the antique spirit of the place."
