order dated 27 Nov 1775. He wrote his will dated 21 Sep 1821, proved 15 Sep
1823 Mecklenburg Co., VA. His wife was already dead, he had no living children
and left bequests to his brothers, many nephews and nieces, and their children

Jefferson. He was left 300 acres of land and the plantation "whereon I
now live" & 140 acres in Chestefield Co. on Turkey Branch in his
father’s 1768 will. In the codicil of William Marshall’s will it was
stated his son, "William be taught to read write and scypher as far as is
needful for common business." Therefore, he was a minor & under the
age of 21. He was listed as one of the heirs of William Marshall in the court
order dated 27 Nov 1775. He enlisted in the Virginia Militia on 1 Apr 1779 and
served for 235 days during the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War. He
emigrated to Kentucy in 1810 and settled near Henderson. Children: Martha

Hatcher. In Aug 1713 Joseph Ward, his younger brother, chose him as his guardian. In Aug
1713 Seth Ward entered himself as security for Robert Burton, Jr., guardian to his
brother, Benjamin Ward. Seth Ward resided at Sheffield’s Plantation in Chesterfield

married daughter of Benj. Ward dec’d, ordered Wm. Gay & Peter Randolph to see this
his wife’s estate is delivered him. (Henrico Co. Order Book 1742, p 196) Seth made his
will 8 Sep 1769 in Dale Parish, Chesterfield Co., VA:
To son, Seth Ward, land he lives
on, on the James River called "Sheffield" and Negroes in his possession, etc.
To son, Benjamin Ward, land I live on, on the Appomattox River, negroes, etc; if he die
under age 21 then to go to son Seth Ward. To daughters, Mary Ward & Martha Ward,
each a negro and 500 pounds. To daughter Ann Ward, a negro and 500 pounds unless she die
under 21. Son Seth Ward to have use of Benjamin’s estate until Benjamin of age.
Executors: son, Seth Ward and sons-in-law, William Broadnax & James Murray & my
friend, Benjamin Watkins. Witnesses: Francis Goode, Leonard Ward, Ben Watkins, Archibald
Cary & James Ball.
On 1 Jan 1773 at Chesterfield Co., VA, Benjamin Ward & Ann
Ward chose Robert Goode as their guardian. (Chesterfield Order Bk 4, page 208) Inventory

education of my children and support of my wife. To wife, Mary Ward for life - Negroes
and to have use of half of my land. If she is with child at my death and it is a son,
that son is to get half of what son, Seth Ward gets; if a daughter, to get 500 pounds.
If any of my children die under age, then one half of my Negroes given them are to go
to my nieces, Nancy and Rebecca Broadnax, after my wife’s death. Executors: Wife and
friends, Joseph Eggleston, Jr. And Daniel Hardaway & Stephen Cocke of Amelia
County. Witnesses: George Markham, Richard Cardwell, Ephraim Mann. Codicil: Executors
are to build houses for my family in a more healthful situation than where my house

Church. He left a will dated 8 Dec 1751 & proved 5 Oct 1753 in Chesterfield Co., VA.

In the name of God Amen August 12th 1718. I Margaret Cocke of the County and
Parish of Henrico Widow, Considering the uncertainty of this life, and being I
thank the Almighty God of Sound and perfect memory I do hereby revoke annul and
make void all former wills heretofore by me made and do make ordain publish and
declare those presents to be my last will and testament in manner and form
following. First I bequeath my Soul to Almighty God who gave it not in the least
doubting of a Joyful resurrection and pardon and Remission of all my sins by the
intercession and merits of my Blessed Saviour Jesus Christ and my body I
bequeath to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors
hereafter named.
I give and bequeath unto my grand daughter Margaret wife of Edward Goodrich one
mulatto boy named John the son of my mulatto woman Sue, which boy is to be
enjoyed by my grand daughter and her heirs forever.
I give and bequeath unto my Grand Daughter Mary the wife of John Worsham and to
her heirs for ever one Mulatto girl named Margaret which she now hath in her
possession.
I give and bequeath unto my Grand Son Peter Wynne and to his heirs forever one
Mulatto man named John Henry he being appointed to be given unto my said Grand
Son by the last Will and Testament of my deceased husband Mr. Thomas Cocke. I
also give to my said Grand Son 10 shillings to buy him a ring.
I also confirm a gift of a Mulatto boy named Thom which I made to Major Joshua
Wynne in his lifetime, upon condition that there be paid (if not already done)
two thousand pounds of tobacco to Thomas Harwood by the administrators of the
said Wynne it being on that proviso I gave the said boy to the said Wynne.
I give and bequeath to my Grand Daughter Margaret Jones two Silver Spoons.
I give and bequeath unto Mrs. Mary Randolph and her heirs forever one Mulatto
boy named Billy.
I give and bequeath unto my Grand Son Peter Jones the son of my son Abraham
Jones decd. ten shillings to buy him a ring.
I give and bequeath unto my Grand Son Joshua Wynne two steers.
I give to each of my Grand Sons Robert Wynne, William Wynne and Francis Wynne a
Cow to be delivered to them when they arrive to lawful age.
I give and bequeath unto my God Son William the Son of William Randolph one
Mulatto boy named James he being the son of my Mulatto woman Sue which Mulatto
boy is to be held by my said God son and his heirs forever.
I give and bequeath all of my wearing clothes to be divided among my Grand
Daughters by my Executors.
I give and bequeath to my son Peter Jones and his heirs forever all the rest of
my estate both real and personal, and I do hereby appoint my said Son, together
with William Randolph to be Executors of this my last Will and Testament In
witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my Seal the day and year
