(USGENWEB by Christine Grimes Thacker, 2001, Grimes Marriages in Alabama 1820-1934)  According to Pioneers of Hopkins Co., TX: "James and his wife came to Texas in 1853 with a company consisting of more than 100 families from Alabama and Virginia and settled near Elysian Fields in Harrison and Panola Counties. James served during the Civil War in the Confederacy under General Magruder as a private in Company D of the First Cavalry, Texas State Troops, from August, 1863, until February, 1864. In the late fall following the Civil War, James and his wife sold their farm in Panola Co. and headed for Hunt Co., where they planned to buy a black land cotton fram. Maria was traveling ahead with their daughters in a buggy. James and the boys followed in a wagon loaded with their household furnishings. They camped on Rock Creek near Col Weaver's place when an early snow fell. He invited them to move into his empty slave quarters until the weather cleared. While waiting for better weather, they decided that Hopkins Co. would be a good place to settle, so they bought property which was later known as the Peck Place. They later bought a farm in the Union community and also a place in the Gafford Chapel area."
