Pages 786-787  William Green Worsham & Rebecca Marmon

1.  William Green Worsham b. abt 1815 of Henderson Co., KY, md Rebecca Henderson Marmon abt 1841. He was a constable in Muscatine, IA & d 1867 Muscatine Co., IA. Descendants lived in Muscatine Co., IA.  Jeffrey R. Backstrand, 2002, found that William Green Worsham is W. G. Worsham in the 1840 Henderson Co., KY census living next to Ludson Worsham. Jeffrey found Ella Stone Worsham Child claimed her fathers birth as KY in the 1920 census. With the earlier marriage of Ludson Worsham (b. abt. 1742, see page 474) to a Green, several family members had the middle or first name of Green. The 1840 Henderson Co., KY cens. has W. G. Worsham 1 male age 20-30 & 1 female age 20- 30. (p. 224, visit 254) Next door is Ludson Worsham. In neither the 1830 or 1840 census, the Ludson Worsham household has a son born between 1810 and 1820. However, William Green Worsham is most likely a brother or son of Ludson Worsham (2.1.2.1.4.4.1.) on page 478. If William Green was a son, Ludson may have been md. before Margaret King. He is W. G. Worsham age 45 OH liveryman in the 1860 Muscatine City, Muscatine Co, IA cens, p.194, #1447.

On June 4, 1849, the name of Bloomington, Iowa was changed to Muscatine for the following reasons: Frequent miscarriages of letters by mail occur by reason of there being towns in Missouri, Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois of the same name. Burlington is sometimes mistaken by postmasters for Bloomington and mail matter is carried to and lies at the former place that is destined for the latter. The reason for adopting the name of MUSCATINE is obvious - it is the name of one of the most noted and conspicuous land marks on the Mississippi River, a name co- eval with the first discovery of the course of the river by LaSalle, at the head of which the town is situated, and is the name of the county of which the town is the seat of justice. There is no other town within the knowledge of your petitioners of the same name. Petition was sworn and subscribed in open court the 4th of June, 1849 by D.C. Cloud, Justice of the Peace, sworn to by Lyman C. Hine, sherrif of Muscatine County, Iowa and signed by Worsham.

William Green Worsham’s wife, Rebecca is on the 1880 1st Ward, Muscatine, Muscatine, IA cens, p 145C. She age 60 b NC along with son David Worsham age 36 b IA & daughter Ella Worsham age 20 b IA.  William Green may have had a son Albert Worsham. In the 1850 Muscatine Co, IA Mortality cens, is Albert Washyam age 1, b. IO, d. 10 Feb, Convultions.

1.1. David Worsham b 8 Oct 1843 IA, (36-1880) d 6 Jan 1913, bur Greenwood Cem., Bloomington, Muscatine Co., IA (Cemeteries in Muscatine Co., p 790)

1.2. Emma Worsham md. Joseph Linn Hoopes. They are in the 1880 Lake, Muscatine, IA ceus, p 218C. He is listed as L. J. Hoops age 34 b IA & Emma is age 26 b IA. Also listed with them is A. Bloomer age 20 b IA & B. F. Marmon age 50 b NC.

1. William Mitchell Worsham "Mitchell" b. abt. 1803 SC and of Hancock Co, GA. (20-30 - 1830)  Mitchell is likely a son of Appling Worsham b abt. 1782 of Rowan, NC.  (See Addenda page 639, paragraph 4) He is Appleton Wosham b 1775-1794 farmer, 1m b 1810-20, 1 m b 1804-10, 4 f 1810-20, 1 f 1804-10, 1 f 1775-1794 in the1820 Putnam Co, GA cens, Capt John Tomlinsons District.  In the 1821 Land Lottery GA, Mitchell Worsham of Putnam Co, drew land in Dooly Co., GA.

On 27 Mar 1824 an indenture was made between Applin Worsham of one part & Merrimon Powel, Sr. of the second part, both of Putnam Co. for $215 for a tract of land being in Putnam Co., GA containing 62 acres which is part of Lot No. 202 in the 14th district originally Baldwin now Putnam beginning on the district line at a post oak corner running south, etc. Wit. Joseph Stanford & Jonathan Harkness. Applin signed X for his mark. On 9 Aug 1838 Joseph Stanford declared he saw Applin sign his name. {Putnam Co. Deeds 1827-1829, Book M, p 354}

He is Appling Worsham in the 1830 Jasper Co., GA census, p 364. He is age 40-50 with 1 male between 10-15 & Females 1 between 10-15, 1 between 15-20; 1 40-50.

In the 1840 Duncanville, Thomas Co, GA cens, Aplin Worshan b 1790-1800, 2 m b 1830-35, 1 f b 1835-40, 2 f b 1830-35, 1 f b 1790-1800, and next door is Mitchell Worshan b 1810-20.

There is a book titled "History of Thomas Co, GA" by Irwin MacIntyre; 1923. This small, 55 page unindexed book is located at the Thomasville Cultural Center Library, 600 E. Washington St, Thomasville, GA.  Of particular interest is page 55 where Alpin & Mitchell Worsham are mentioned. This may be a reference to the 1840 census.

These Putnam Co & Thomas Co references connect Appling & Mitchell.

Mitchell md. 1st) Matilda Dennis 12 Aug 1824 Hancock Co, GA.  Matilda b abt 1805.  They are in the 1830 Butts Co, GA cens., p160, as Mitchel Worsham, age 20-30, & wife age 20-30, next to William Stroud Jr, Robert Grimince? Mitchell Worsham md 2nd) Harriett E. “The W. and E. Tuckers are parents to Harriet Tucker, my 3rd great-grandmother, and I suspect J. Wisham to possibly be her son from an earlier marriage to a Mitchell Worsham. Harriet Tucker & Mitchell Worsham were divorced in Crawford Co, GA, in 1840, for reason of abandonment. David G. Worsham of Crawford Co. served as witness on several land deeds for James M. Harper soon after his marriage to Harriet, he may have been related to Mitchell.”

David G. Worsham, b. 22 Feb 1800 of Amelia Co, VA & d. 20 Oct 1853 Crawford Co, GA, lived in Crawford Co, GA in 1850. David and his family are on page 311.  After Harriet's divorce, she md James M. Harper 3 Oct 1841 Crawford, GA. “James M. & Harriett's child b in or near Macon, GA in 1860. James died in the Civil War, as did a number of his sons.” (Naomi Schoenfeld, 1999)

Shirley Donaldson, 2000 wrote:

"Louella Britt is my Aunt on my Mother's side, she is one of seven daughter's of Nancy Jane Worsham Britt. My Aunt Louella is the oldest child … I have in her own handwriting a story of the Worsham's ... In one generation of the Worsham's their were 3 orphaned children, 2 boys, 1 girl. They were very young, the girl about 14, the boys about 15 and 16 or so. The youngest boy was trying to care for his sister until she became ill, he then took her to a Doctor Richardson in Macon, Ga. The good Doctor took her in, said she had female problems, he would care for her, the brother was sent on his way! This young woman bore 2 sons for the Doctor but would not give them his name since he never married her. They were given the name of Worsham instead! This is the story, as my Aunt Louella remembers! She was embarrassed to talk about it, and said Grandmother would not ever let anyone tell this story!"

Ethel C. Worsham "Big Mama" Jul 3, 1919 - Dec 9, 2003. With tears, we saw you sinking And watched you pass away. Our hearts were broken. We wanted you to stay. But when we saw you sleeping So peaceful and free from pain. How could we wish you back with us? To suffer all that again. It broke our hearts to lose you But you did not go alone. For part of us went with you The day God took you home. I know roses grow in Heaven Lord So pick a special one for me. Place it in my Mother’s hand And tell her it’s from me. Tell her that I love her And when she turns to smile. Place a kiss upon her cheek And hold her close for a while. Remind her that even though Our Family Chain is broken And nothing seems the same. That you will call us home One by one, and our Chain Will link again. Sadly missed by children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family and friends.

He said that when viewed from a distance farmers homes looked like bird’s nests.” (Washington: Government Printing Office, 1890. Wraps. First edition. 5 ¾ x 9 ¼”. 102 pages.)

By Clark Wheeler:

“WORSHAM, WILLIAM BENJAMIN (1843-1915). William Benjamin (Uncle Dick) Worsham, rancher, businessman, and banker, b to William Talbert and Minta Ann (Stokes) Worsham on February 8, 1843, in Callaway Co, MO. The Civil War erupted when Worsham was eighteen. He joined the Union Army and served in the Fifteenth Missouri Cavalry in Capt. Samuel Roberts's company. Worsham survived the war, having seen action in Arkansas and Missouri. Following the war he remained in Missouri to farm and do construction work for the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1868 he traveled to Texas and took a job as a cattle drover. He ran cattle from Texas to Kansas on the Chisholm Trail. In 1875 he married Nettie G. Collins in Pike County, Missouri. They had two children. In 1876 Worsham bought some land in Clay and Hardeman counties, locating for a time at Cambridge, and started his own ranch. Later in 1880 he purchased 20,000 acres in Foard County and 40,000 acres near Henrietta in North TX. Worsham and a partner, J. R. Stephens, ran as many as 60,000 cattle on various tracts of land until 1882, when the partnership dissolved. Worsham tried his hand at mining copper on his ranch near Henrietta in 1875. The copper was of poor quality, and the venture was discontinued after a few months. He served as a member of the board for the Exchange National Bank of Dallas and opened up his own bank in Henrietta, the W. B. Worsham and Company Bank, in 1898. Worsham was a faithful Republican. He served as a delegate at several state conventions. He is credited with coining the term "nesters" in reference to farmers, who were regarded as the enemy by ranchers. The story is that one day while checking cattle, one of Worsham's cowboys saw at a distance the dwellings of farmers. He said they looked like bird's nests. The term spread throughout the Southwest. Worsham lived in Henrietta for many  years and died there at his home on October 26, 1915, from tubercular meningitis. At the time of his death Worsham's estate was valued at one million dollars. "WILLIAM BENJAMIN WORSHAM. In this review it is our pleasure and privilege to present the life work of one whose identity with North and West Texas has spanned almost a third of a century and one whose connection with the vital affairs of this section has been at once prominent and conspicuous. The various phases of his diversified career mark him as one of the real and stable characters of this territory, and it is pride and achievement which prompts this modest reference to him whose name initiates this notice. In youth and early manhood accustomed to the rough usages of hard work, in middle and later life evolving and executing successful schemes for the promotion of his vast and growing financial interests, toward the evening of his career is still busy and in the enjoyment of the fruits which destiny ordained. It was not ordered that Texas should give W. B. Worsham birth, it is sufficient that his conquests should occur in this state. His natal day was February 8, 1843, and his place Callaway county, Missouri. He is a son of William Talbert Worsham, who migrated to Missouri about 1835 from near Petersburg, Virginia, where his birth occurred in 1811. He devoted his life to the farm and died in Callaway in 1883. He married Minta Ann Stokes, who passed away in 1893, being the mother of the following children: Henry S., of Comanche county, Oklahoma; William B., Ditreon V., of Ada, Indian Territory. A son, Joseph A., died in Henrietta as postmaster of the city under the first Cleveland administration. Two daughters, Mrs. Mary Wiley and Mrs. Eliza A. Johnson, died in Lawrence county, Missouri, leaving families. A country school education was all that seemed in store for young Worsham on the farm, and the first year of the war he enlisted in the Fifteenth Missouri Cavalry--as did also his older and younger brothers--for service in Capt. Samuel Roberts' Company, United States troops. He saw service around Springfield, Missouri, and in Arkansas and the Cherokee Nation and was discharged in 1865, being mustered out June thirtieth of that year. The first half dozen years succeeding the war Mr. Worsham spent on the farm in his native county. Having an opportunity to exceed the profits of the farm in a wholly different line of work, he took advantage of it and engaged in railroad contract work. He did grading on the Union Pacific, built sixteen miles of the St. Louis and San Francisco at Pierce City, Missouri. He abandoned this business in 1868, came to Texas and engaged as a cattle drover between this state and Kansas. Baxter Springs and Coffeyville were his objective points and he shipped many cars of native beef from there to markets of the east. In 1876 he began ranching in Clay county. His success enabled him to purchase tracts of pasture land in this and Hardeman county. He first located to Cambridge but in 1880 removed to Hardeman county.
